Will the truth set you free?

The truth hurts. It really does and everybody wants to avoid it as much as they can. Some even to the extent of saying that there’s no absolute truth (this statement is paradoxical and I shall not explain). Truth causes pain to anyone who hears it. But who says the truth must be bad? Yeah, there may be good truths but most of them are saddening.  That is a saddening truth in itself.
If there are so many sad truths, will it set us free? Which secular truth will set us free? How is it like to be freed and will we ever come to be like this?
Does it all matter?
May it be when shadows call…

The deluded speaks

"This one is machine and nerve and has his mind concluded, this one is but flesh and faith and the more deluded…"
The Gravemind
It’s helmsman week again and today is the second day. The teachers invited this ex-VJ girl who is prolly 20+/- to share her "success story" with us. What she did was to go to Nepal on a missionary trip, was touched by the people, came back to Singapore and made a short book with her own paintings telling people to follow their dreams. Proceeds made will go entirely to the people there. She has raised $90,000 so far. Although I applaud her efforts in trying to help the poor, her concept of chasing your dreams is…erm…one-sided. And hence the title of this post.
She told us to chase our dreams and do what we want to do, don’t give up. Although she has succeeded in her work? How about her passion to work in BBC? She said she was so convicted and so excited about the prospect of joining them. But she was turned down. It was her dream wasn’t it? Why didn’t she pursue it? Nevertheless, I think she made the right choice. SOmetimes we do not know what we really want. Our passions may have been influenced by some other factor and when we realise that we’ve made the wrong choices, it might be too late.
Chasing our dreams may not be the right thing to do. I urge everyone who reads this not to be decieved by her. Success is rare, for success to occur, many failures must take place first. Sometimes, the success that follows does not justify the losses. She claims that strength, perseverance and commitment is all it takes to succeed. As I said before, you can rub a mountain with a silk cloth for eternity and the mountain will still be there, no matter how much of the above qualities one possesses. Success, i tell you, comprises of the above qualities and a HELL LOT OF LUCK.
If luck is not on your side, I can safely say that you’re screwed. If conditions are not favourable you might as well give up before you lose even more. Nevertheless, the winds of change may blow luck your way when you’re in a lull. So I say evaluate the odds and make a choice. For every success story of one who persevered on through the winds of change and emerged victorious, I can find you 99 others, maybe some are more apt than he/she, who withered away, not because they gave up but simply ran out of resources and simply fell away. Success is a rare thing. I can prove that that ex-VJ girl had a hell lot of luck and very favourable conditions. I shall list them down.
Number 1.
I recall her saying this: I don’t know how it happened but it happened. Bingo, do you think that everything happens like this? No way. She is bloody lucky. How can you not know what happened?
Number 2.
She claimed that the publisher just told her to go on with her project when she didn’t have anything to show to the publishers, no drafts nothing. She just spoke her mind and told the publisher her IDEA. Nothing more than an IDEA. WHAT THE FU**??!! She is bloody lucky again. How many people will get a job by saying," I think I will be able to contribute to the company although I have nothing to prove that I can."? JUST HOW MANY??!! Point proven.
Number 3.
This is her trump card. I don’t know if she realised this or not but her book is to be sold for charity. It is a fund raising activity for the Nepalese. It is a moral-inducing thing. I don’t know how to phrase it but it is because it is done for charity and therefore she got the publisher and 90K. It’s like doing a stunt. Let’s say Mr Khoo is going to dive 250m below sea level with nothing but scuba gear. His lungs will probably burst but this is just an example. If he’s doing it for his own glory and honour, people will think he’s nuts. BUT, if he says he’s doing it for charity then he’ll be a hero. Same concept here. It’s her trump card and this point alone provides the best conditions for her success.
Success doesn’t come easy. And I don’t like being told how to succeed by a 20 something year old, especially one who is deluded and without wisdom. Wisdom comes with age and experience and I don’t think she displays much of it yet.
Moral of the story? Hard work + strength + perseverance + technique + HELL LOT OF LUCK = success

Interschools 2.0

Ok…this is a mega lag entry because for the past few days I’ve been super tired, busy catching up with homework and the stupid server is overloaded. Anyway here’s the reprot on the last two days of interschools…
It’s my turn to start sailing. Wind was starting to pick up at 9+, wilbur and elliot were cheering because they claimed they own in strong winds and the wind will probably kill off some competitors but i was sulking. Strong wind meant two things: 1. Mega-father boat speed and alot of hiking = mega tired but 2. The HIJ girl will die = one less competitor for Cynthia and Nicole…Revenge is mine or the wind’s…
The Laser boys will be having a hard time against ACSI, outnumbered and probably outskilled (more nats on their side) they will ahve to stand their ground to take the title again this year. We started out promptly at 10+ and reached the race course soon enough. The wind died. We were all drifting around slacking in our boats, some were even dozing off. Cynthia dozed off too but i was looking out for competition, ppl that i can follow and memorise their sail numbers. As wilbur predicted, the wind soon picked up and blew at around 10 knots (according to Mr Yong when we returned back to shore) and did a 90 degrees wind shift. WTFOMFGBBQ. Geez, what a big shift. Darn the wind, now it was blowing super strong and I reckon that I would be trapezing if the byte had a trapeze.
First race went really badly, just like all first races. Need to be familiar with the course.
Second race was much better
Third race was shit
Fourth race was slightly better again…
And when they blew the horn for the 5th race I was swearing my ass off, shitting 5 races in a day. My legs were burning form hiking already and I want to go home and zzZZ but no…*ing officials just had to have 5 races. If I could swear in Afrikaans, I will….Verdomde!
Fifth race was shit, as expected.
When we went back, we found out that we were tied with ACSI but if this were to keep up, ACSI would win because they have the highest positions. Situation was very tense but Mr Yong urged us to go home, eat and have a good rest and most importantly "reset" your mind. But no prizes for guessing who wasn’t able to sleep that night.
Lessons learnt from today…
1. Taking 1.5 hours to write runes on your tiller extension with tape is not worth it, it all got wiped off. What was supposed to be COURAGE FOR OUR FRIENDS turned out to become FINDS, so many glyphs came out…RAH!
2. That HIJ girl seriously sucked in strong wind, I saw her capsized boat near mark 3 as I rounded it. She retired from the other 4 races.
3. Some ppl are not as good as they look. Do not underestimate or overestimate your opponents.
Today was going to be a tense day. Everyone was on the edge. After rigging up, we went to the hut for a mission brief. The plan was simple, win the game. Suddenly the ACSI teacher in charge wanted to pray with us. I was surprised. We prayed with them and I hope their intentions are true.
Bytes had only two races today. It was over as soon as it started. And I did much better than yesterday. 🙂
When I returned, the girls had just left on powerboat to see the races. So I was stuck on shore waiting to wash my byte for the last time and to wait on shore for the results…It feels good now that I don’t have to sail the byte anymore. It’s like passing O level chinese. Always getting pwnt by the lasers because I have a smaller sail size and smaller this and that. No need to mention sailing against a 420. Ah…feels good alright, hope I go back to sail 420 next year, that’s if I can find a helm.
When I saw the team’s downcast faces I knew we didn’t win. I went to ask around and the girl’s said we lost by a small margin. So now begins the post-race war… Wilbur and Calvin both filed protests against ACSI, if Calvin won, we will beat ACSI by 1 point. Wilbur’s protest didn’t matter but i guess it made him feel good.
Situation was very tense. Calvin protested because he said that someone hit the mark and didn’t do the penalty till the next leg of the race. Eventually after slogging it out against ACSI, Calvin emerged from the protest room VICTORIOUS! And the cry was heard far and across the land: WE’VE WON!!! For the 9th time. It felt good. Victory is sailed…All the training put in, we’ve won! Although I didn’t contribute to it, I was happy nonetheless.

Ah…interschools is here again…I sure am glad that I don’t have to go to school for a week. Skip bio, chinese and most importantly…LANG ARTS!!! Muahahaha…
The day started off very well, everyone was in high spirits and the weather was good. It wasn’t the strongest of winds but the officials decided to raise the AP flag. Firetruckers…so the team ended up huddling under the shade of the trees and a 420 talking cock and playing cards. At around 2 AP flag was lowered and we were set to launch. By then the wind had picked up to more than 10 knots and a storm was approaching. The girls set out nonetheless with nothing but courage and determination in their hearts.
We then raced a nearby breakwater to catch the action but guess what? it started to rain! Heavily! Zomg… we dashed back to NSC but my book Eldest got wet. Sad…so sad, will have to dry it at home. The Lasers and 420s and Optis started to return back to NSC and we had to go help pull the girl’s boats back to shore, after which we went swimming! The waves were imba high and it was uber fun letting it sweep over you. Then again, they had to set out again, this time still with courage and determniation but also with irritation with the race officials.
We then raced back to the same breakwater with our binocs and watched the action. the 420 race was dominated by VJ ppl but the Lasers were more interesting to watch, overtaking and being overtook. In the end, lasers came in 1st 3rd 4th and 5th. 420s were obviously 1st and 2nd. why? because there was only one race in the whole day. poor sailors had to stone for more than an hour before coming back…
We’re winning
Two things that i learnt today
1. That HIJ girl is here!!! Rah! And she is MUCH taller than I expected, almost yining’s height…and guess who she looks like…WADEE!!! WTFOMFGBBQ…but slimmer(no offence) and taller.
2. Nicole is the ultimate megafather gossipmonger
The ultimate important thing that I learnt today
-NEVER bring a book to a breakwater if it looks like it’s going to storm…
